Area Code 610 History and Coverage
Area code 610 entered service in 1994 through a geographic split of Pennsylvania's original 215 numbering plan area. Before that change, 215 had served the state's entire southeastern quadrant since the North American Numbering Plan began in 1947. The split gave much of the territory outside Philadelphia its own code as the region's demand for telephone numbers continued to grow.
The development of the area code 610 numbering plan territory is based on several major Pennsylvania corridors rather than on a single metropolitan center. Its coverage area includes most of Lehigh and Northampton Counties, extending westward to Berks County and southward to Delaware and Chester Counties. The area also includes portions of Montgomery County, thus putting the Main Line and upper Schuylkill Valley regions into the same numbering area.
An additional area code, 484, came into existence in 1999 as an overlay within the geographic boundaries of area code 610, as opposed to yet another geographic split of the area code. Area code 835 was added to the 610/484 region as an additional overlay in September 2022.
