Area Code 835 History and Coverage
Area code 835 entered service on September 2, 2022, following a Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission order issued in December 2021. The commission approved it as an all-services overlay for the established 484/610 numbering plan area, adding a new supply of telephone numbers across a heavily developed part of the state.
Its regulatory history reaches back further. Pennsylvania selected 835 for planned relief in the early 2000s, when additional area codes were being considered for the 610/484 region. Number-conservation measures, including thousands-block pooling, delayed the need for activation, and the earlier plan was suspended. The code remained available for future relief in the same region.
The 2022 launch placed 835 alongside two earlier codes with distinct roles in the region’s numbering history. Area code 610 was created in 1994 through a geographic split from 215, while 484 joined the 610 territory as an overlay in 1999. Together, 484, 610, and 835 serve parts of Lehigh, Berks, Delaware, Chester, and Northampton counties, plus a portion of Montgomery County. The shared territory links the Lehigh Valley with communities west and southwest of Philadelphia.
