Area Code 510 History and Coverage
510 was introduced in 1991 as the result of splitting 415 area code geographically and separating East Bay from San Francisco and Peninsula, which served as the center of the numbering plan area. The coverage of 510 at that time was somewhat larger than now due to extensive suburban development in the East Bay area.
The second geographic split of 510 occurred in 1998, when area code 925 was separated from 510. 925 comprised most of Contra Costa County east of the San Francisco Bay and the Tri-Valley area, which lies to the interior of 510’s boundaries. After that, area code 510 remained as it exists today – confined to more populated regions near the coast of the East Bay and western Contra Costa County.
Additional need of telephone numbers resulted in geographic overlay of 510 area with area code 341 in 2019. As opposed to split, the overlay consisted in adding the new code without altering boundaries of the geographic service area. Currently, area code 510 covers the San Francisco Bay shoreline of the inner East Bay and western Contra Costa County, whereas 925 covers mostly inland valleys and eastern suburbs of the region.
