Area Code 717 History and Coverage

Area code 717 was designated in 1947 when it was first allotted under the North American Numbering Plan, as one of the original numbering plan area codes in Pennsylvania. In its early days, the area served by the code was much bigger, extending through the central and northeastern parts of Pennsylvania. This was due to the original numbering plan area layout of the state, with just a few number plans covering all of Pennsylvania.

A geographic split in 1998 created area code 570 from the northern and northeastern part of the 717 territory. Communities around Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and the state’s upper Susquehanna region became part of 570, while 717 remained focused on the south-central portion of Pennsylvania. Area code 223 was later added as an overlay for the same remaining territory.

The current 717/223 region follows several established travel and settlement corridors. It includes the agricultural landscapes of Lancaster County, the Cumberland Valley west of the Susquehanna River, and the route toward the Maryland border through York and Adams counties. The coverage also extends into parts of the ridge-and-valley country north and west of Lancaster, including communities along the Juniata River basin.
