Area Code 588 History and Coverage
Area code 588 entered service on September 9, 2015, as part of the North American Numbering Plan’s non-geographic 5XX numbering resources. Its introduction did not create a new local territory or alter the boundaries of an existing state or provincial code. Instead, 588 was made available for services that can operate without being assigned to a defined geographic region.
Before 588 was activated, the 5XX group had developed from the earlier 500 personal communications resource. In 2012 the Industry Numbering Committee broadened the description of the resource to account for new potential non-geographic services, including machine-to-machine applications. Such approach took into consideration the fact that there are certain devices or services that communicate between networks without following the old paradigm of telephone number allocated to a community, county or rate center.
In addition to 588, other codes, such as 533, 544, 566, 577 have also been designated among the 5XX family of codes prior to the assignment of 588.
