Area Code 619 History and Coverage
Area code 619 entered service in 1982 as a geographic split from 714, separating the southern and eastern part of that earlier numbering-plan area. Its first footprint was much larger than the territory associated with 619 today. In 1997, another geographic split created 760 from 619, moving the region’s wide eastern and desert reaches into a separate code. The 760 territory now runs through southeastern California, reaching the Mexican and Arizona borders and extending north along the Nevada side of the state.
The second split occurred in 1999 as 858 was split off from 619 for the northern area of the metropolitan area. This reflects the increasing need for more telephone numbers because of growth in Southern California. Geographic split refers to dividing the area code in terms of geography, whereas the overlay means creating an additional area code within the same service area.
In 2017, California Public Utilities Commission decided to eliminate the boundary between 619 and 858 area codes.
