Area Code 645 History and Coverage

Area code 645 was implemented in 2023 due to the predictions of exhaustion of the 305/786 number allocation area. It has been approved by the Florida Public Service Commission as an overlay for the same region that has not undergone a geographic split since the creation of the numbering area, and increased capacity of numbering without changing the boundaries of the local numbering area.

The roots of area code 645 go back to 1947 when 305 was an original area code for all of Florida. However, the subsequent development of Florida resulted in several geographic splits of area codes: 813 split from 305 in 1953, 407 and 954 followed in future decades. In 1998, there were too many telephone numbers allocated in the remaining 305 area code, and an overlay 786 was introduced rather than making another split.

As far as the southern part of the numbering area is concerned, its own history began in 1998 when 786 became an overlay for Miami-Dade County, and then extended to cover Florida Keys in 2014. Area code 645 was introduced to the combined region of Miami-Dade and Florida Keys numbering areas.
