Area Code 404 History and Coverage
Georgia obtained 404 in 1947, which is when the North American Numbering Plan initially assigned an unusually low number of area codes within the United States and Canada. Until the late nineties, area code 404 spanned the whole state of Georgia, from the Appalachian foothills and Piedmont to the coastal plain and even the border with Florida. In fact, this statewide configuration reflects an earlier stage of telephone numbering development, since it was no longer viable in light of the metropolitan growth.
Geographic split of 404 took place in 1995, and as a result, area code 770 was established for most of the area that was not in the metropolitan core, thus dramatically decreasing the territory covered by 404. In addition, due to number demand in the wider metro area, 678 was overlaid on the 404/770 service territory in 1998, and 470 in 2010, followed by 943 in 2022.
As a consequence, this configuration combines one of the original Georgia area codes and some other area codes serving the same large metropolitan network. Apart from the metropolitan area, 770 covers the outer suburbs and even Cartersville, Covington, and Gainesville.
