Area Code 908 History and Coverage
Area code 908 was introduced on January 1, 1990, through a geographic split of New Jersey’s 201 numbering plan area. Planning records cited substantial telephone-number growth in northern New Jersey as the reason for creating the new code. The original jurisdiction of area code 908 included a wide section of central and northern New Jersey, which incorporated all or some sections of Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, Union, and Warren counties.
New Jersey’s earlier numbering history gives the change some context. Area code 201 covered the entire state when the North American Numbering Plan began in 1947. The state first gained a second code in 1956, when 609 was assigned to its southern section. The 908 split marked another major reorganization as population and business activity increased in the state’s northern half.
Another geographic split has occurred in 1997 when the area code 732 was introduced. As a result, the territory of Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and parts of Somerset county switched to the 732 area code, whereas 908 became a western and north-central part of its original jurisdiction. Presently, the 908 area is confined to the Raritan Valley westwards to the Hunterdon and Warren counties.
