Area Code 832 History and Coverage
The area code 832 was introduced as an overlay in 1999 in order to assist the codes 713 and 281 in a fast-growing southeastern Texas numbering plan area. This overlay did not replace the previous codes but just increased the numbers available in the same geographical area due to residential and commercial expansion that took place in the late 1990s.
Code 713 is one of the original area codes in the North America, having been assigned in 1947, but it originally covered a far wider region of southeastern Texas than today. Code 409 resulted from the geographic split of this area in 1983. Then in 1996, code 281 was introduced to cover most of the surrounding suburbs, after 832 had been added.
The 832 numbers are found in the belt that runs from west of Katy and Sugar Land, northwards to The Woodlands, and to the southeast to Pearland. There are also 832 numbers in the eastern portion of the area, including Baytown and the Houston Ship Channel.
