Area Code 713 History and Coverage
Area code 713 was assigned in 1947 as one of Texas’s original four North American Numbering Plan codes, initially covering a much larger section of southeast Texas. Its early territory extended from the Sabine River area west toward the Brazos Valley, reflecting the broad regional telephone boundaries used at the time.
The first geographical split of the 713 code took place in 1983 with the introduction of the area code 409. With the help of this split, the south-eastern parts of Texas were separated from the 713 code, and 713 remained a territory mostly belonging to the Houston area. The next geographical split happened in 1996 when the area code 281 was introduced for all suburban parts of the region.
However, numbering demands required another approach, and in 1999, the line between 713 and 281 territories was dissolved, and the overlay code 832 was added to the combined territory. In 2014, the 346 area code became an additional part of the overlay complex. The 621 overlay code was introduced in 2025.
