Area Code 281 History and Coverage
In 1996, 281 was introduced after being separated geographically from 713, to address the expanding needs of telephone numbers in an area that was not within the core service area of the older area code. This happened at a time when suburban construction, corporate expansion, cell phones, fax machines, and home telephones increased the need for telephone numbers. Instead of assigning the number to another distant market, 281 was allocated to regions that would be served by the rapidly growing metropolitan economy.
In 1999, the area code 832 was introduced as an overlay serving 281 and 713 service area. In 2014, 346 became the third overlay to serve the region in addition to 281. As the regional numbering plan required more capacity, 281 was used together with other numbers in the region’s geographic service area.
The geographic territory covered by 281 has shown development along major corridors outside the central city. The areas that have been included with 281 include regions associated with Fort Bend County and Montgomery County, as well as regions located in the Gulf Coast plain near Galveston Bay.
