Area Code 346 History and Coverage
Area code 346 was introduced in 2014 as an overlay on the existing 713, 281, and 832 numbering plan area. The introduction of this new code showed that there was still high demand for telephone numbers in the region defined by growth of the population, suburban developments, and numerous employers. The older 713 code was implemented in 1947, when it covered a far wider swath of southeast Texas. A 1996 split yielded the 281 code, and the 832 code was introduced as an overlay; 346 is another code used in this interconnected numbering plan area.
Instead of defining a new territory, the code 346 is used in the entire shared service area. This area spans most of Harris County and extends into neighboring sections of Fort Bend and Montgomery counties, as development occurs in this part of the Gulf Coastal Plain. Growth in population and employment has occurred along the roads that lead to Sugar Land, The Woodlands, and other peripheral areas. The economy of the region involves energy, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and higher education industries, providing demand for more numbers. The Galveston Bay and Upper Texas Coast make up the southern part of the broader metropolitan area.
