Area Code 522 History and Coverage
Area code 522 was implemented in August 2016 as another supplement of non-geographic 5XX codes. Earlier, 522 code along with other codes was allocated to be used for future personal communications service which later became the non-geographic service. This explains why the 522 area code has never become the local code of any growing metropolitan market, county line or state line.
In the North American Numbering Plan, 5XX codes were introduced separately from the geographic codes denoting specific regions. The code 500 was initially allocated to personal communications services, and 522 was introduced as a supplement in order to increase the capacity of the numbering space of non-geographic use. As explained by NANPA in 2016, the area code 522 supplemented the already existing 5XX codes.
There was no geographical division to implement 522 as an overlay on any city or regional code; hence, there is no relation between the area code 522 and Great Lakes or any state line or any US time zone. The historical background of area code 522 is the shared numbering plan for the United States, Canada, and some participating Caribbean countries. The list of non-geographic 5XX codes includes 500, 533, 544, 566, 577 and 588 which were active prior to introducing 522.
