Area Code 770 History and Coverage

Area code 770 was assigned in 1995 when Georgia’s 404 area code was geographically split as the Atlanta region’s telephone numbering needs grew. The new code took much of the suburban territory outside the central 404 zone, matching metropolitan expansion into surrounding counties. Its early geography included areas along the Georgia 400 corridor and the northern and eastern sides of metro Atlanta, along with communities extending toward the I-20 and I-85 corridors.

In 1998, there was created area code 678 serving as an overlay to 404 and 770 area codes allowing another code for the same regional territory without geographic splitting again. Another overlay area code 470 was created for the entire combined 404, 678, and 770 area in 2010. The addition of these two more codes reflects the density of homes, offices, and mobile services within the Atlanta metropolitan area rather than any change to the splitting origins of 770 area code.

Within Georgia’s numbering plan, 770 remains closely tied to the suburban belt that developed around Atlanta after the 404 split. Its coverage has long included portions of Cobb, Gwinnett, and Henry counties, areas connected to Atlanta by major highway corridors.
