Area Code 678 History and Coverage

Area code 678 was introduced as an overlay to the already existing 404 and 770 number plan regions in January 1998. The state of Georgia had originally been using the 404 area code, while the 770 area code came into being in 1995 due to the splitting up of the 404 area through geographic division. In contrast to the previous area codes, the introduction of the new 678 area code did not involve any boundaries at all – it provided numbers for both regions.

This corresponded to the swift development of the metro area which was taking place during the late 1990s. The development of the metro area was occurring in the already developed suburban areas as well as along the routes running to the north, east, west and south of the urban center. The decision to introduce the overlay instead of redividing the metro region once again helped to preserve the unified metro region of both the 404 and 770 numbering plan regions.

The area code 678 covers a large portion of north-central Georgia's Atlanta-centered urbanized corridor. This includes the area around Cobb and Gwinnett counties as well as the northeastern suburban region and even some southern metro region closer to Peachtree City and Griffin. Two additional overlays later joined the same numbering region – 470 and, most recently, 943.
