Area Code 470 History and Coverage
470 area code was introduced as a reliever for the Atlanta metropolitan numbering plan in 2001, but was made operational in 2010. 470 area code was launched as an overlay where it served the existing 404, 770 and 678 service regions since there were more numbers needed in the quickly expanding Atlanta market.
The numbering history behind the region reaches back to 1947, when 404 was Georgia’s original statewide area code. As metropolitan Atlanta expanded beyond the city limits, 770 was introduced in 1995 for much of the surrounding area. The 678 code followed in 1998 as an overlay for the 404 and 770 region. By the time 470 began service, the area had become a shared numbering complex serving a broad part of north-central Georgia.
Its footprint extends beyond Atlanta proper into communities and employment centers around the metropolitan ring, including Alpharetta and Duluth to the north and northeast, as well as Peachtree City and Griffin on the region’s southern side. Gainesville, near the northeastern edge of the metro area, is also within the shared 404, 470, 678, 770, and later 943 numbering region.
