Area Code 943 History and Coverage
Area code 943 entered service on March 15, 2022, as per the Georgia Public Service Commission ruling to increase capacity for Metro Atlanta's established area code region. The ruling was made by the commission in October 6, 2020, when the North American Numbering Plan Administrator predicted the exhaustion of prefixes within the 404, 470, 678, and 770 region by the second quarter of 2023.
The new code was introduced as an all-services overlay, preserving the region’s existing area-code boundaries while making 943 available for new number assignments. Its arrival continued a sequence of numbering changes shaped by Atlanta’s long-term growth. 770 was added as the area code in 1995 for counties of Atlanta that were outside the city, and 678 was introduced as an overlay code in 1998 for the 404 and 770 region. 470 became part of the same overlay complex as 404 and 770 in 2010.
By 2022, 943 became the fifth area code in the numbering plan of Metro Atlanta. The area code was introduced in order to provide new numbering resources for a region consisting of large employment centers, expanding suburbs, and communities located throughout North Fulton County to Gwinnett, Cobb, and other metropolitan areas of Georgia.
