Area Code 621 History and Coverage

Area code 621 entered service on January 23, 2025, following Texas approval of additional numbering relief for the Houston region in 2023. The new code joined the established 281, 346, 713, and 832 arrangement as an all-services distributed overlay, increasing the supply of available telephone numbers across the same service territory.

Area code 713 was one of four original Texas numbering plan areas established in 1947, which at first covered a much larger portion of southeast Texas. Geographic split of 1996 established area code 281 for many suburban communities. Further expansion required regulators to overlay both territories with area code 832 in 1999. Area code 346 was approved in 2014 to cover growing need for numbers.

Forecasts showed that the existing four-code group would face number exhaustion in 2025, prompting the Public Utility Commission of Texas to authorize 621 in Project No. 54986. The relief plan was designed to provide additional numbering capacity for the region for roughly nine years.
