Area Code 532 History and Coverage
On November 4, 2024, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator began assigning 532 NXX codes after the available supply in the active 5XX-NXX resource reached exhaust. The Industry Numbering Committee had set aside 532 in May 2012 as part of a group of codes reserved to expand the 5YY numbering resource.
That resource grew from area code 500, which was designated for personal communications service in 1993. In 2012, the committee broadened its service description to include machine-to-machine and other non-geographic applications as communications technology expanded beyond the original personal-service model. The guidelines were subsequently renamed the Non-Geographic 5XX-NXX Code Assignment Guidelines.
NANPA identified 532 as the next code available for assignment in Planning Letter 628. The code entered service after previously assigned 5XX codes, including 500, 521 through 529, 533, 544, 566, 577, and 588, had supplied their assignable NXX resources. The governing guidelines require NANPA to provide advance notice before an active 5XX resource exhausts and before the next reserved code is placed into assignment. November 4, 2024, marked the start of 532 assignments within that reserved numbering pool.
